Ladies, for an easy and low-cost way to feel more fabulous in a snap, treat yourself to a manicure from your local salon. Here in NYC there is an abundance of options for great nails on almost every corner. For me, I have my no-fuss/affordable shop in Murray Hill, Romie's ($8/manicure) and for nights that I want something hot and extra special I hit up my girls at Valley.
The biggest problem I have with manis/pedis is the fact that they don't last very long before the paint chips and considering the time & money spent in the salon, I want my color to stay. Recently I found a way around this issue by just slapping on some clear Top Coat daily on your pretty digits. It's affordable, ranging between $1-$4 a bottle and it can prevent chips and help lengthen the time between appointments from 1-3 weeks.
Top Coat can not only help increase the life of your manicure, but I also learned that in addition to stopping runs in your stockings, this clear polish can also help keep your buttons from unraveling. Place a drop on the thread in the center of the button to help keep it in place. This tip thanks to the always adorable, Johnny Cupcakes. It's that time again for the eighth annual NIME concert, where performers play a series of newly designed electronic instruments that aim to keep the “live” in the live performance of digital music.

This year's NIME concert will feature such innovations as a musically enhanced sewing machine, sonified floor tiles, performative knitting needles, turntablism for live instrumentalists, electronically controlled cartoon antics, novel realizations of the rock guitar, and a host of other exciting approaches to the creation of music.

The Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU, which was recently deemed "The Center for the Recently Possible" has some of the coolest and talented people on the planet so it's no surprise these geniuses have whipped up a music festival to kick off the beginning of the school year.

Each night will feature an amazing lineup of past and present ITP musicians and visualists, so come out and see old friends, make new ones, and be blown away by the diversity and talent.

ITPalooza kicks off early on Wednesday 9/9, with a 6:30 happy hour with $2 beers and glasses of wine. Music starts at 7:30pm. Thursday & Friday, the shows will start at 9pm. The shows aren't free, but they are dirt cheap, just 5 or 10 bucks and totally worth it.

7) Don't leave any mess behind!!! We come and then go (the place looks the same as it does when we came, except more wet).

OMG! Thank you to my friend Lara for telling me about this FREE Mighty Boosh Show and dance party this evening. Julian Barratt, Noel Fielding plus additional cast members will perform the show at Bowery Ballroom tonight to celebrate the DVD US release of the first three seasons of their show.
I have no idea how many Boosh fans will turn out but I'd recommend getting there super early to stand in line. Should be amazing though! Yay! Reason number one million, three thousand and two, why I love New York City......The Mighty Boosh sometimes come to visit us.

Paul McCartney is currently playing three nights at Citi Field. Luckily I've seen Macca before so I'm not too bummed about not having a ticket, but I do wish I'd heard about THIS opportunity sooner.

Apparently Paul's making a film and he needs some help from all of you young filmmakers out there. They are looking for thirty people to shoot each show, July 17, 18 & 21, on Flip cameras. They provide the cameras, all they need is the talent! The first 90 people to email will get to shoot one of the shows. Be A Scene Stealer-Tips on Getting FREE Shakespeare Tickets

I'm not sure if you've figured this out yet, but summer in New York City is hands down the best time of year! Part of the fun for me is just figuring out how to squeeze in time for all the awesome outdoor offerings. One of the coolest options is Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Twelfth Night is currently playing, but only through this Sunday, July 12th. Anne Hathaway stars in the comedy about the romantic adventures of a pair of twins. Then beginning August 11th-30th they are running, The Bacchae, Euripides', greek tragedy. Shows take place Tuesday-Sunday at 8pm. Tickets are available on a first-come first-served basis on the day of the performance and distributed to the public promptly at 1pm. Last year I saw Hamlet like 4 times so I thought I'd whip up a list of my top tips on how to most easily score these FREE tickets.

1). Arrive early, but not THAT early. People start lining up for tickets to Shakespeare in the Park as early as 6am!!!!, but I wouldn't. I also don't recommend sleeping in the park or going at the crack of dawn unless you're going on a Friday/Saturday night or the weekend a show closes. If you DO decided to camp out for tickets don't go before 6am because they won't allow let you wait on line before then.

In my experience If you show up around 9-10am during the week you should be fine. There were many times I've shown up at 12:30pm, right before the tickets are handed out and I've been ok. Another option if you're in the area is to go to the theater right before the show starts, like 7:30pm and just wait to see if there are any extra tickets. They keep about 10 extra seats for most shows and if people from the "virtual line" haven't don't show up by 7:45pm they release these extra tickets to the public.

2) Go on a Weekday and on days that rain is predicted. Tuesday or Wednesday nights are the best. People get really upset about rain here but organizers don't ever want to cancel the show for bad weather, so unless it's torrential rain you're probably ok for not being rained out. The tickets are non-exchangeable so sometimes people don't want to take the risk of losing a seat if there's rain in the forecast, definitely hit it up the line on these days, it will probably be shorter.

3) Don't Believe the Hype. Everyone always says how hard it is to get these tickets and it's really not that hard. Especially if you've got a few days where you are available to stop by the theater. Do not get upset if you show up and see a million people standing on line, the theater is big and they have a LOT of tickets. You can get tickets to this show without paying the scalpers on Craigslist, I have never gone, waited on line and walked away without a ticket.

4) Use the online waiting list. I haven't had tons of luck with this option but odds are if you hit it up daily you will eventually get a ticket. I have had friends find success with this method. I prefer the scenic route of hanging out in Central Park but if you work during they day this is a great option. The way it works is that you sign up in the morning and then check the website again between 1-6pm and if you've "won" a ticket you will be able to find after 1pm on the same website. Instructions for pickup will be emailed to you.

5) Bring a friend and a blanket. Waiting in the line can be pretty boring although there are a lot of street musicians and performers who hang around to entertain the people waiting. You're also sitting on the sidewalk/ground so bring something comfortable to sit on. Make sure your friend meets up with you at the same time as you arrive though, because staff members are pretty strict about cutting.

6) You can get 2 tickets per person, but ask around for extras. This is a great option if you are trying to get a few extra tickets for your friends who couldn't wait in line. A lot of people think that you only get one ticket per person after waiting in line so they bring their entire party to come sit and wait. These people are usually from out of town and so I always ask them for their extra un-needed tickets and they almost always oblige.

7.) Move to the Upper West Side. I know this is asking a lot of you just to get Shakespeare tickets but the Upper West Side is beautiful. It's full of babies and dogs and awesome free furniture on the street! Being close to the park is amazing and it makes it very easy to stop by a few times in a week and snag some Shakespeare in the park tickets.

The experience of Shakespeare in the Park is phenomenal so I hope you will try and attend. The theater is open air and a ticket gets you a numbered seat, not a spot on the lawn, which is a nice feature compared to other outdoor concerts/shows in NYC. Good luck and have an awesome summer!

Happy July 1st! I am SO excited about Summer 2009, it's gonna be awesome, as soon as this rain goes away for good... Today also announces the opening of Lasker Pool in Central Park which is the best kept secret in NYC. This is a gorgeous outdoor pool, clean and never too busy. Best part....you guessed it, it's free! This info isn't on they're site but I swam here tons last year and they offer lap swimming early in the mornings (7-8:30am) and in the evenings (7-8:30pm). It's almost like swimming in the ocean because the water is so warm. Did I mention it was awesome yet? Definitely check it out. Other great free city pools include John Jay on the East side btwn 76-78th streets and a great indoor pool is Chelsea, on West 25th Street.

Mermainia! Coney Island Mermaid Parade-Saturday, June 20th

Two words: Mermaid Parade. 'Nuff said. I totally missed this event last year but really want to hit it up tomorrow. This is the nation's largest art parade and one of New York City's greatest summer events! Best part is that it's FREE! This year the parade will be lead by King Neptune, Mr. Harvey Keitel. Special Appearances by The Uptown String Band from the Philadelphia Mummers Parade! “A Whale of A Tale", plus performers from Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey’s Boom a ring!

The fun begins at 2pm, but get there early to grab a spot on the parade route. If you have any questions, the answer is probably here.

One Step at a Time- Williamsburg Walks June 6th

OMG this event sounds so fun. Decorating blank my little ponies for charity. The My Little Pony Invitational is an exceptional equestrian exhibition. Blank My Little Ponies were given to some local artists to design as they choose and tonight is the outcome!

There’s sculpture, photography and even some diorama-style pieces in this show. All of the completed ponies are currently on sale on eBay and then show at Champion Coffee. Catch of the Day! The ITP Spring Show, May 10-11

Come join some big fish in a big pond at the ITP Spring Show 2009, a two-day festival of interactive sight, sound and technology from
the student artists and innovators at ITP. This event is of course FREE and open to the public.

An oversized Greenwich Village loft houses the computer labs, rotating exhibitions, and production workshops that are ITP -- the Interactive Telecommunications Program. Founded in 1979 as the first graduate education program in alternative media, ITP has grown into a living community of technologists, theorists, engineers, designers, and artists uniquely dedicated to pushing the boundaries of interactivity in the real and digital worlds. A hands-on approach to experimentation, production and risk-taking make this hi-tech fun house a creative home not only to its 220 students, but also to an extended network of the technology industry's most daring and prolific practitioners.

Some of the coolest projects I've seen include Controlling the Computer in the Mud, Painting Robots, An Alarm Clock that needs a hug and the most beautiful display of lights controlled by wind. Everything there should be pretty amazing though. Hope you can join!

Wiggin' Out: Some Dreams really do come true!

At the request of my sister Virginia..ie Badinia , I am putting up a story about one of my favorite past-times...dumpster diving for wigs. A few months ago a classmate emailed me and said that a Ricky's was closing down near NYU and they were throwing out all the merchandise. He'd spotted a huge dumpster full of colorful wigs, mannequins, costumes, etc. all up for grabs.
So of course I took my lunch break immediately and headed on down there before all the good stuff was gone. I made friends with a few homeless people and quickly found myself waist-deep in mannequin body parts.
Among the amazing things I got that afternoon were 17 colorful wigs (still in the package), a brand new set of hot rollers, and a few random mannequin hands. I then decided to do what any reasonable person with 17 new wigs would do... I decided to have my friends over for a Wig Party. For the invite I enlisted the help of my fabulous friend Kathleen to take some photos. (seen above). She did a great job and we had a great time at the party. This story is just another one of the million reasons I love living New York City. Free Wigs = Good Times! xoxo

So the weather is officially getting gorgeous and that means free outdoor movies! With the Tribeca Film Festival just around the corner get in on some free flicks at the World Financial Center Plaza. In honor of their 25th anniversary, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will make a totally radical appearance along with their sidekick April at the Drive-In's giant pizza party and screening of their 1990 film.

To welcome the Turtles, the plaza will be decorated with glow-in-the-dark manhole covers. Families can climb inside the all-new Party Wagon, a mobile treasure trove based on the original Party Van. Kids can get their faces painted Turtle-style, take pictures at the photo booth, and pick up new moves with karate demos!

Put a Lid on It- NYC Easter Parade April 12th

Hooray! It's Easter this Sunday and we have the rare opportunity to see some beautiful Easter bonnets at the New York City Easter Parade. Come watch as extreme as "paraders" wander along Fifth Avenue from 49th to 57th Streets. The area around St. Patrick's Cathedral is the ideal place to see the parade. The Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Unlike most New York City Parades, the Easter Parade is a slightly unorganized event. From 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. the area along Fifth Avenue from 49th to 57th Streets is closed to traffic, and people wander the street admiring various Easter Bonnets and Easter outfits. This parade doesn't have any floats or marching bands but it is a spectacle nonetheless. From around the world people come to New York City to participate spectators can expect to see live rabbits, snakes and clowns. Outfits range from elegant to outrageous. It's gonna be sweet!

With the current state of the economy many are finding themselves jobless or dateless or both.

Before you go to print up new cards, here are some things to consider:

Weight of the card stock. Sure flimsy paper is less expensive than a more substantial stock - and that’s the impression that it leaves about you: cheap.
Overall design. Is your name, logo and contact information clear? Are too many design elements - graphics, logos or photos - interfering with someone’s ability to read your card? How do you want your information to run - horizontally or vertically?
Font style and size. Again, it’s all about readability. Classic fonts such as Times New Roman, Helvetica, Arial and Verdana are easier on the eye than flowing script or trendy fonts in 8-point text.
Color. If you choose to use color, don’t go overboard. And make sure that the colors you choose are complementary to your business. Unless you run a Halloween costume shop, you might want to steer clear of black and orange combinations.
Consistency. Your card is just one element of your overall brand so it is important that your business card have the look and feel of the rest of your stationery and Web site.
The back of the card. Don’t overlook the back of your card to provide additional information. Many companies include a mission statement or a list of professional organization memberships. A meaningful or funny quote on the back can give people insight into your personality.

Time Warp--24 Hour event at Guggenheim Jan 6th

The Guggenheim loves staying open all night and they're at it again today, with a 24 hour event on the concept of time.

This event begins tonight, January 6th from 6pm until 6pm January 7th and is totally free!!

In addition to the 24-hour Psycho screening there will be a series of lectures and performances
throughout the night.

Come join the crew of artists, scientists, musicians, philosophers and all around interesting people who will be presenting on the topic.

You're welcome to bring your sleeping bags and camp out

Get Moving...Where to Find cheap Digs in 2009!

Happy 2009! In the spirit of resolutions and change that comes with a new year let me encourage you all to get out there and find your dream apartment.

I just recently started investigating this and have found that the downturn of the economy means a drop in rental prices for Manhattan. So that sweet one bedroom in the village you've had your eye on may actually be in your price range....Awesome right?

I highly recommend Street Easy, a site that's great for buying/renting apartments in NYC that allows you to find real no-fee housing and you can check out how long a property has been on the market to help with your negotiations. Plus there's a great section called "Talk" where people give and seek advice on renter/buyer issues.

Also No Fee Rentals is good for finding places that don't have a hefty broker fee, as well as ol' faithful, Craigslist.

Once you find your dream apartment/condo, check out the free ferry to Ikea in Red Hook to stock up some sweet swedish furnishings.

Blow Up!! Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Last year was my first Thanksgiving in the city and I went all out to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime event. I decided in the spirit of giving to share my top tips to getting the most (for free) out of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.

1. Avoid massive crowds and get to see the balloons up close. Head up to the Natural History Museum on Wednesday night (11/26) for "Inflation Eve" where these monstrous balloons are blown up on museum lawn from 3pm-10pm.

2. Get a spot uptown. The parade starts at 77th & Central Park West and ends at 34th & 7th Ave. My favorite viewing area is along Central Park West, between 66th and 77th Streets. It is crowded here but not crazy. At least here - at the beginning of the route - the balloon handlers, marchers, etc are at the height of their excitement and energy level and you can enjoy the splendor of the park across the street. Plus I brought a folding chair and had enough room to spread out and sit on the sidewalk which you won't find around Herald Square.

3.Get there early, but don't get too crazy. People may recommend getting there at the crack of dawn but unless you want all in the action on 34th street it's not necessary. Last year I got there around 6:45am and got a GREAT spot. Once you find a space don't move/leave. It'll be gone when you get back. Grab your coffee and donuts in shifts so that you can secure your piece of the sidewalk. The actual Thanksgiving Day Parade starts at 9:00 AM, so bring a book/music and blankets for while you wait.

4. And finally, try to watch the parade with a child. This is the coolest part. Last year I let some children sit on my lap who's parents had brought them late and while a little weird at first, over all a really sweet experience. Children make everything seem wondrous and this parade is something for the kids. I loved it. If there's a kid behind you straining to see the floats, let them jump in front of you, you won't regret it!

Psycho Killer, Qu'est-ce que c'est? Fri. November 14th!

Ok, so this sounds super cool...an opportunity to wander around the Guggenheim in the middle of the night and watch Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho slowed down and played over 24 hours!

Deploying time as a medium, Gordon's new iteration of the work 24 Hour Psycho (1993) slows down the 1960 Hitchcock thriller to a full-day cycle on a split screen installation, running the film both forward and in reverse. The museum will remain open through the night and visitors are encouraged to bring sleeping bags and stay through the whole event.

Donations are recommended but technically it's free. I also heard from a reliable source that 10pm is around the time that the shower scene is playing. Go check out the chocolate syrup they used for this scene to mimic the bloooood!

Spooky Streets-The Village Halloween Parade!

It's Halloweeeeeeeeeeeeeen! Tons of free parties in NYC but the Halloween Parade is #1 on my list of things to do. This is a huge, community organized halloween parade that happens every year in the Village.

The Parade is going down on 6th Avenue from Spring Street to 21st Street from 7 - 10 p.m.
Cost: FREE but get there early to reserve a spot as they shut down entrance to the streets around 6:30pm. Super FUN!
